Encaustic paints are made of filtered beeswax, resin, and pigments. Encaustic paints are probably the most durable form of painting, as discovered by the Faiyûm mummy portraits in Egypt which have survived over 2000 years without cracking, flaking, or fading. Wax has several inherent qualities allowing it to withstand the test of time: it is moisture resistant, mildew and fungus resistant, unappetizing to insects, and is a natural adhesive. Encaustic paint also does not contain solvents or oils so they will not darken or yellow with age leaving the painting bright and fresh.
Here are just a few of the encaustic pieces I have in my gallery.
